A stolen vehicle pursuit that began in Riverside County ended in a barricade situation when the vehicle became disabled near Desert Hot Springs. The suspect refused to exit and showed no sign of complying with officer commands.
According to a report from Crime Voice, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Desert Hot Springs Police Department after an initial attempt to stop the vehicle with a tire deflation device was unsuccessful. Once the vehicle became disabled and the suspect barricaded himself inside, officers deployed a PepperBall launcher. The suspect exited the vehicle shortly after and was taken into custody without incident.
No injuries were reported to officers or the suspect.
This incident highlights the value of mutual aid between agencies and the role a less-lethal standoff option plays when traditional tactics like tire deflation devices don't resolve a pursuit. With PepperBall, officers from both departments were able to bring the situation to a safe conclusion without further escalation.
