When a warrant service turns into a barricade, officers have to make decisions without knowing exactly what is waiting on the other side of a door. That was the situation Fannin County Sheriff’s deputies faced in Bonham, Texas, when an attempt to serve a felony warrant became an hours-long standoff.
According to Fannin County Sheriff Cody Shook, 43-year-old Jay Cole Davidson fled a probation office around 1:30 p.m. and was tracked to his home near Liberty and Denison Streets. When deputies arrived, Davidson barricaded himself with 36-year-old Nyssa Matchen inside a building on the property.
A SWAT team responded with an armored vehicle and initially cleared the residence but did not find Davidson. Deputies later determined that Davidson and Matchen had moved into a shed in the backyard.
That created a different challenge. Entering a small, confined structure would have required officers to close distance without knowing where the two individuals were positioned or what they might encounter inside.
Instead, deputies deployed PepperBall projectiles into the shed.
Davidson and Matchen came out shortly afterward and were taken into custody. Davidson was booked into the Fannin County Jail and is being held without bond. Matchen was arrested on outstanding warrants, with additional charges possible. No injuries were reported, and the sheriff’s office said the incident did not pose a danger to the surrounding neighborhood.
The response demonstrates the practical value of giving officers another option before committing to a physical entry. In a confined structure with limited visibility, PepperBall allowed deputies to influence the environment while maintaining distance.
That distance matters. It gives officers additional time to assess the situation, adjust tactics and work toward compliance without immediately putting personnel into close quarters.
In Bonham, that option helped bring an hours-long barricade to an end without injury—and without requiring deputies to make another blind entry. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO
